Snapshot from the Death Valley Super Bloom!

About a week ago I got a text from my friend Ellie asking me if I wanted to trek out to Death Valley to the super bloom that everyone had been talking about. Of course, being the lover of road trips, picnics, and national parks that I am, I was immediately up for it.  I knew that having realistic expectations was important, and I also knew we were probably about a week too late, but I was still so excited to see the flowers that were there, and for the road trip to and from. Expectations perfectly set y’all, because it was a great weekend.

Happy Blogiversary to Hello Megan O!

Hello Megan O turns one year old this month, and what a year it has been! Happy Blogiversary!

Blogiversary and business cards

I can’t believe that I’ve already been blogging for a year! I feel like I have accomplished so much, I’ve met some very awesome people, and I even have business cards now! I’ve really enjoyed having a space to document things that happen in my life, and being able to look back and remember/remind myself how lucky I am to be where I am. I jump at any chance to reminisce, so of course a blogiversary post was in order!

The Here and Now // 02.27.16

One of the reasons I blog is to have a reminder of the normal, everyday things I do each week, as well as the things I’m currently enjoying. While there will always be fantastic trips and exciting projects, the little things are what make the day-to-day exciting, and those are the things I don’t want to forget! Every/most Fridays, I’m giving you a peak into the song I’ve been jamming to, the books I’m reading, and anything else that’s been making my heart happy that week.

Whoops, long time no update! February is one of our craziest months at work, so the blog took a little bit of a backseat, but things should hopefully be slightly less crazy soon! I can’t really complain, I’m the kind of busy I love; work is mostly fulfilling, I’m spending time with friends, etc. Didn’t do as much checking off of the to-do list as I would have liked, but there’s always next week!

Staying Organized With Oh Hello Stationery Co (+ A Coupon!)

Hands up if one of your 2016 new years resolutions was to get organized? Keep those hands up if you still are trying to figure out a way to do that? Ok, now put those hands down, because this time last year, I was just like you. Once I added on blogging to a full time job, I knew it was time to get serious about getting organized, or else I would start/continue to forget important events and deadlines. Nothing on my phone was working for me, because I realized that typing it didn’t commit it to memory like writing it did, and I just couldn’t remember to check my phone .

Finding Bookstore Nirvana at The Last Bookstore

Books are easily one of my favourite things in the world, and so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I think that bookstores are actual heaven on earth. I mean yes, I love Amazon as much as the next girl, but there’s nothing like going to an independent bookstore, especially a used bookstore and perusing the options. All the stories have stories, ya know? What more could you want?

The Last Bookstore LAWhen I first heard about The Last Bookstore in Los Angeles, I knew I needed to make a trip. Books and vinyl and art, all in one place? Yes please.  Continue reading

I loved this week. I don’t know if its because Mercury finally came out of retrograde or because I made a more conscious decision to have a positive attitude or because I’m finally feeling better and able to play soccer again, but I’ve felt like a weight has been lifted off me. To be honest, it’s probably all three. There were lots of exciting things this week, I went down to San Diego State for their study abroad fair, I made more plans for my big trip this summer, and today is my sister’s birthday!

Anyone else feel like this Friday took forever to get here? Maybe it’s because I’ve been fighting a cold, but this has been the longest  week ! I’ve been really busy at work, so its been nice to unwind in the evenings by holing up in bed with Netflix.

Top 3 Things to do in San Luis Obispo!

It’s no secret that San Luis Obispo is one of my favourite places to spend a long weekend. Beyond the fact that some of my best friends live there, there is just so much to do, no matter the season! I’ve listed out some of my favourite activities below, but this is by no means an exhaustive list. Oh, and when you go, tag me on those inevitable Instagram posts (I’m @hellomegano) so that I can be super jealous.

Thoughts on Being a ‘Cross-Cultural Kid’

cross cultural kid baby

Yes, that is me in all my tiny human glory. Cross Cultural kid from the start.

Growing up, I clearly remember the first time I realized that I was a little bit different from my peers. I was in fourth grade, everyone was sitting on the floor at the front of the classroom, and people were talking about their plans for winter break, which included things like Disneyland, driving a few hours to visit family at Christmas, etc. I was going to England and Switzerland. It was then I realized that not everyone had parents who both had immigrated to the US, that not everyone had grown up eating food from around the world, that most of my peers didn’t have to think in time zones and go on such long flights to see their grandparents.

I never had a way of identifying what I was, besides different. I knew that I should be happy to be from a family that travels, a family that was so cultural and unique, but as a young teen especially, I rebelled. I wanted to be “normal”. I didn’t want friends to come over and ask what we were having for dinner before they agreed to stay, I didn’t want people to ask about my parents accents, and I definitely didn’t want to be proud of being anything other than a full-blown American after 9-11. It was hard, and although I (thankfully!) grew out of that phase, made friends who were much kinder than middle schoolers tend to be, and realized that I have my own, very screwy accent, I still never knew anyone who was really “like me”.

Or so I thought.

What to Eat in Portland!

Blue Star doughnuts in PortlandEveryone who had been to Portland before me told me to prepare my stomach for an onslaught of absolutely delicious food, and boy, they were NOT kidding. My biggest regret of my time in Portland was that I only had one stomach, and try as I did, I could not taste everything I wanted to.  However,  the food that I did eat (not to mention the beer and coffee!) was so spectacular, I just had to share some of my favourites!
